The UN Security council renews ICTR mandate

Information reaching Umuvugizi newspaper confirms that the UN Security Council has renewed the ICTR, an international tribunal based in Arusha to try the Rwanda genocide suspects. The ICTR mandate was due to expire on June 30, 2012, but the UN Security Council decided to renew the mandate to December, 31, 2014.

The UN Security Council took the decision on June, 20, 2012, and informed the ICTR judges to expedite the trial of suspects of Rwanda 1994 genocide against Tutsi and crimes committed during the war at that time.

Among the judges whose contract was renewed till December 31, 2014, include Vagn Joensen, Danish national and President of ICTR court chamber. And his other colleagues like Judge William H Sekure, from Tanzania, Judge Solomy Balungi Bossa, from Uganda and Judge Mparany Mamy Richard Rajohnson from Madagascar; also had their contracts renewed and will expire on December 30, 2014.
