THE UNITED STATES HAS PLEADED WITH RWANDA TO STOP SUPPORTING THE BREAK-AWAY FACTION OF THE CONGOLESE ARMY M23.

Barrie Walkley, US special envoy to the Great Lakes region.

The US special envoy to the Great Lakes region, Barrie Walkley, held a press conference in Kinshasa early Monday to express concern over the war raging in Eastern Congo.

Mr. Walkley said “I have discussed at great lengths with President Kabila our concerns of the ongoing instability in the Kivu region”.

Barrie Walkley added that before he arrived in Kinshasa, he spent time in Kigali discussing the Congo problem with Rwandan officials. “ I expressed our stand on this conflict and called upon the Rwandan Government to put a stop to any assistance rendered to the M23 rebels.”

Asked whether there was sufficient evidence showing Rwanda’s complicity, Mr. Walkley said that the UN reports on this rebellion explicitly show in detail the complicity of the Government of Rwanda. He further added that Rwandan military forces that are in Congolese territory have to leave Congo expressly. “This is the US message to Rwandan Officials whom we shall continue to communicate with diplomatically.”
